from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Friedrich Zimmermann (born March 27, 1916 in Pfrentsch ; † January 17, 1984 in Eslarn ) was a German Roman Catholic priest , church musician and diocesan music director . He became known as the boarding school manager at the Regensburger Domspatzen affected by child abuse incidents and was convicted of sexual abuse in 1969.

Life

The musically gifted Georg Friedrich attended the Episcopal Boys' Seminar in Regensburg , which he completed with a university entrance qualification. Subsequently, he began studying at the local state philosophy-theological college . From January 3, 1941 to October 1, 1945 he served in the war and was a prisoner of war . Zimmermann returned war-injured, with an amputated leg, and resumed studying Catholic theology . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1949 and was chaplain in Neunburg vorm Wald for one year from August 1, 1949 . On August 1, 1950, Zimmermann was appointed prefect at the Straubing Episcopal Study Seminar , and from September 1, 1954, he took over the position of music prefect there. During this time he studied music in Munich , Cologne and Vienna .

On January 1, 1959, Zimmermann took over the position of director of the boarding schools of the cathedral inspectors and the cathedral grammar school of the Regensburg Cathedral Spatzen , which he had to leave again nine months later, as the successor to Friedrich Zeitler . He then settled in the Eslarn market and trained boys there “for sacred choral service”. In March 1962, Zimmermann founded the Eslarn Singing and Play School , from which the Eslarn Boys' Chapel emerged.

From June 1, 1964 to May 30, 1969, Zimmermann held the office of diocesan music director in the diocese of Regensburg. Zimmermann was sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment and imprisoned in February 1969 for continued sexual abuse of addicts and children, with an expert opinion confirmed that he was less responsible. Several identical offenses were not pursued.

From September 1972 to October 1973 Zimmermann worked as the music prefect in the Episcopal Study Seminar in Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . At the instigation of the seminar leader, he was given early retirement on November 1, 1973.

Zimmermann was entrusted with the musical training of young people in Eslarn for several years. He founded music bands and choirs and from 1973 headed the Grenzlandmusikschule Eslarn , which emerged from the Sing- und Spielschule , and in 1978 the youth music corps in Moosbach .

Memorial plaque from 1992 in the Eslarner town hall: In memory of the founder of the Grenzland-Musikschule eV

In Eslarn, Zimmermann was posthumously honored in 1992 by the Heimatverein “Die Eslarner in München eV” with a plaque in the town hall foyer for the establishment of the “Grenzland-Musikschule”. A street in Eslarn has been named after Zimmermann since 1993. The Eslarner municipal council dealt with and postponed an application by a victim of abuse to rename this street.
