The Regensburger Domspatzen primary school is a state-recognized, two-tier private primary school for boys in Regensburg . It is affiliated with the Regensburger Domspatzen music high school, with a focus on musical education.

history

In 1946, provisional lessons with fourth graders began in Etterzhausen. In January 1948, the Bavarian Ministry of Culture granted permission to operate the school and boarding school. At the time, the boarding school was run by the Association of Friends of the Regensburg Cathedral Choir under its chairman Josef Engert . The former director of the boarding school was the cathedral music director Theobald Schrems . In 1957 the newly established Etterzhausen Foundation of Regensburger Domspatzen took over the sponsorship of the school boarding school. The founding director of the foundation was the Roman Catholic priest Johann Meier , who had been prefect at the Regensburg Domspatzen boarding school since 1953. In 1958 Meier was appointed director of the school boarding school. In 1981 the Domspatzen primary school moved to the monastery in the neighboring village of Pielenhofen , and the Pielenhofen Foundation of Regensburger Domspatzen became the school sponsor . After Josef Meier retired in 1992, the priest Joseph König took over the management. This worked until the summer of 2013 when the primary school was relocated to Regensburg. Since the 2005/06 school year, the boarding school has been equipped with grades 1 to 4 and is therefore officially recognized as a full primary school. This happened under the leadership of the long-time rector Wolfgang Sack, who was in office until July 2011. At the beginning of the school year 2011/12, Petra Stadtherr began her service as headmistress.

In 2013, the elementary school in Regensburg moved into a newly constructed building on Reichsstraße, right next to the Domspatzen music high school. The construction costs amounted to around 13 million euros. It includes a gym, eight classrooms and thirteen music practice rooms. The four-class primary school is supported by the Regensburger Domspatzen Foundation , which is supported by the Regensburg Cathedral Chapter and the Association of Friends of the Regensburg Cathedral Choir . This foundation is also responsible for the music high school with boarding school and the cathedral choir, the Regensburger Domspatzen .

Reports of ill-treatment and abuse

In May 1948, sexual assaults by Ambros Josef Pfiffig against boarding school students became known. Pfiffig had worked as prefect in Etterzhausen since 1946 and was then transferred to Tirschenreuth by Regensburg vicar general Josef Franz as a cooperator for youth pastoral care .

In spring 2010 cases of mistreatment and abuse in the boarding school in Etterzhausen and Pielenhofen became public. Regarding the spiritual director Johann Meier (term of office 1958 to 1992), who died in 1992, it is reported that he "hit the cane out of the blue". The newspaper reported that the clergyman had "punished students with five to ten strokes of the cane, which were either placed on the fingertips, fingernails or buttocks." An editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported in 2010 that the headmaster had an eight-year-old in the 1981/1982 school year Boys hit with a chair until the chair broke on his back because he was angry about the student's misconduct as an altar boy at early mass. A student who had doubled over with stomach pain had been disqualified as a simulant by the director; he later had to undergo emergency surgery because of a ruptured appendix . Even small violations of the instructions were so violent slaps punished that then often the handprint was visible on his cheek.

Former boarding school students also reported sexual abuse in Etterzhausen and Pielenhofen. Some of those affected are still fighting for their recognition.

The former Regensburg cathedral music director Georg Ratzinger (term of office 1964 to 1994) came under fire as a member of the board of trustees of the school foundation. Ratzinger stated that he had no knowledge of the attacks in Etterzhausen and Pielenhofen and expressed his regret.

In April 2015 the diocese of Regensburg announced that it would also check the incidents in the pre-schools of the Regensburger Domspatzen and the previous diocesan recognition practice with the help of a lawyer. The lawyer recommended by the White Ring, Ulrich Weber, has now set up his own website through which those affected can contact him. Former boarders affected by assault and abuse are said to be involved in the investigation.

On January 8, 2016, the special investigator of the diocese of Regensburg and victim lawyer Ulrich Weber published an interim report on the abuse of 231 children between 1953 and 1992 at the Regensburger Domspatzen. Another 50 children are also said to have been sexually abused.
