Christine Schmitt (born May 26, 1953 in Rostock , after marriage to Christine Dreßel ) is a former German gymnast who was part of the GDR national team from 1967 to 1972. She started for the SC Empor Rostock .

Career

Christine Schmitt was third on the balance beam in the GDR championship in 1968 . As a substitute gymnast, she went to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, but was not used. In 1969 she finished second in the all-around competition behind Karin Janz at the GDR championship. 1970 was her most successful year. At the GDR championship she again finished second behind Karin Janz in the all-around competition, on the balance beam she won the championship title, on the three other machines she came second in each case. The 1970 World Cup took place in Ljubljana. The GDR squad (see picture) won silver behind the Soviet gymnasts. Christine Schmitt qualified for the final on the balance beam as ninth of the all-around competition. There Erika Zuchold won ahead of the American Cathy Rigby ; Christine Schmitt won bronze together with Larissa Petrik .

Christine Schmitt returned to the GDR squad in 1972 after a long injury break and qualified for the Olympic Games in Munich. The GDR squad with Irene Abel , Angelika Hellmann , Karin Janz, Richarda Schmeißer , Christine Schmitt and Erika Zuchold won silver behind the gymnasts from the Soviet Union. Schmitt took 15th place in the all-around competition, but did not reach a single final.

For her sporting success she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1972 .

Christine Schmitt graduated from the DHfK in Leipzig after her career and has been a sports teacher at a Leipzig school since then.
