Tauern bike path

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tauern Cycle Path is a 270 and 320 km long long- distance cycle path available in two versions . It runs along the rivers Salzach and Inn through the Austrian federal states of Salzburg and Upper Austria and in a variant along the Saalach through the Bavarian Berchtesgadener Land . The name of the cycle path refers to the alpine mountain range of the Hohe Tauern , along the north side of which the path runs in the first part.

course

The Tauern bike path variant via Zell am See, Saalfelden and Lofer

The cycle path begins in Oberpinzgau at the Krimmler waterfall and basically always leads along the Salzach through the Pinzgau and then through the Pongau and Tennengau to the state capital Salzburg .

In one variant, the cycle path follows the border between Austria and Germany from Salzburg and continues through the Flachgau and the Upper Austrian Innviertel along the Salzach to its confluence with the Inn near Braunau . The Tauern Cycle Path then continues along the Inn to Passau , where there is a connection to the Danube Cycle Path . From the Upper Austrian municipality of Hochburg-Ach or the Bavarian Burghausen opposite , the route to Passau can also be covered on the Bavarian side of the Salzach and Inn. From the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers between Burghausen and Braunau, the route corresponds to the Inn cycle path .

The other and shorter variant of the Tauern Cycle Path leads from Salzburg on German territory (there partly as a fairly uneven gravel path) through the Saalach valley in an arc back into the Pinzgau, whereby the route to Lofer corresponds to the Kleiner Deutsche Eck . From Lofer, this variant is paved throughout, but is also located on roads independent of the road to the southern exit of the valley in the noise zone of roads with heavy traffic. At Maishofen the path leaves the Saalachtal and leads via Zell am See back into the Salzach valley, where it meets its upper course again at Kaprun .

Elevation profile and condition

Completion of the gap on the Austrian federal highway 311 in the Salzachtal

The cycle path begins at Krimml at around 1100 meters above sea level and leads with only slight counter-climbs to Passau, which is just over 300 meters high. On the route on the circular route from Salzburg to Zell am See along the Saalach there are occasional climbs with corresponding counter-slopes - although ultimately only 300 meters of altitude have to be overcome - but less overall than on the route along the Salzach between Zell am See and Salzburg . The cycle path has been well developed in recent years and only contains two gaps on roads with a higher volume of vehicles: around 800 m near Eschenau west of Lend and almost 15 km between Werfen and Pass Lueg . In the latter case, the Salzachtal Straße must be used.

Overall, the surface is very different and ranges from asphalt to concrete slabs and gravel roads to forest paths on which the use of a trekking bike is an advantage.

marketing

The Tauern Cycle Path is marketed as a tourist product. It is advertised - especially in view of its low sporting demands, especially from Salzburg to Passau - as a “family cycle path”. One also refers to the natural beauties and sights along the route. There are separate cycle route maps for the Tauern cycle path.
