Irene Abel (born February 12, 1953 in East Berlin ) is a former German gymnast who was part of the GDR national team from 1971 to 1974. She started for SC Dynamo Berlin .

Career

Irene Abel had been doing gymnastics at SC Einheit Dresden for seven years when she won the balance beam at the junior tournament of the socialist countries in 1968. She was then delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin and trained with Jürgen Heritz . In 1971 she took second place on the ground and third place in the horse jump at the GDR championships. In 1972 she qualified for the Olympic Games in Munich. The GDR squad with Irene Abel, Angelika Hellmann , Karin Janz , Richarda Schmeißer , Christine Schmitt and Erika Zuchold won silver behind the gymnasts from the Soviet Union. In the all-around competition, Irene Abel placed eleventh, but could not reach a device final. At the 1974 World Cup in Varna, the GDR squad with Irene Abel, Heike Gerisch , Angelika Hellmann, Bärbel Röhrich , Richarda Schmeißer and Annelore Zinke again won silver behind the Soviet team. Abel reached 14th place in the all-around competition.

After her career, Irene Abel was a trainer at Dynamo Berlin, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, at Preussen Berlin . Her daughter Katja is also a successful gymnast.
