Kenneth Gilbert

Kenneth Gilbert (born December 16, 1931 in Montreal , † April 16, 2020 ) was a Canadian harpsichordist .

Life

Kenneth Gilbert studied at the Conservatoire in Montreal and Paris with Gaston Litaize , Ruggero Gerlin and Nadia Boulanger . For four years he worked at the Italian Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. In 1957 he was appointed professor for harpsichord in Montreal. In 1969 he taught at Laval University in Québec, and from 1971 also at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. In 1973 Gilbert succeeded Gustav Leonhardt at the Haarlem Summer Academy (NL). From 1981 he taught at the Stuttgart University of Music . He was head of the early music department at the Strasbourg Conservatory.

From 1989 Kenneth Gilbert was full professor for harpsichord at the Salzburg Mozarteum . He was also director of the harpsichord seminar at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and the Fondazione Cini in Venice. He was visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in London.

Gilbert devoted himself mainly to historical performance practice and was famous as an interpreter of French composers. Gilbert played on historical instruments. For the 300th birthday of François Couperin , he recorded his complete works and edited a corresponding new edition by the composer (1969). 1971–1984 he published the first critical complete edition of the sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti in the Le Pupitre series by the Paris publisher Heugel.
