Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (born May 12, 1703 in Turin , † January 11, 1755 in Paris ) was a French composer , harpsichordist and singer.

Life

Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, whose father worked at the court of Savoy in Turin, received musical training at an early age. In 1725 he moved to Paris and made his first appearance as a composer with the setting of several comedies by Alexis Piron . In 1734 he first shared the position of “Maître de musique des Enfants de France” with Jean-Baptiste Matho (1663–1743), ie he was the music teacher for the children of King Louis XV. , and became the sole owner of this position after Mathos' death. In 1753, shortly before his death, he became director of the royal chamber music and orchestra director of the opera . From 1748 he was joint director of the Concerts spirituels with Gabriel Capperan . During this time the concert hall was modernized and an organ was installed.
