Studio K7 , also known as Stud! O K7 and ! K7 , also Studio! K7 , is a German music label .

history

The label originally emerged from the trendy café Swing with the associated video distributor United Video System on Nollendorfplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg . Due to larger video productions and more complex concert recordings, etc. a. Berlin Atonal , the firm artistic core, consisting of Reiner Bumke , Stephan Guntli , Michael F. Huse and Horst Weidenmüller, decided in 1984 to found the independent video and television production studio K7 - audiovisual communication . The name, written as STUD! O K7 , goes back to the location of the first office in Berlin-Charlottenburg at Kaiserdamm 7; The exclamation mark in front of the logo is a rudiment of the "i" s turned on its head by the designer Petra Bielefeld : "STUD! O K7" to "! K7".

With the gradual dissolution of the partnership between the founding members from 1991 to 1993, Stud! O K7 , like the offshoot ! K7 Records founded by Horst Weidenmüller in 1996 , became a music label for electronic music operated in Berlin . ! K7 is still one of the few remaining completely independent large labels in Germany.

The label relocates u. a. Records by artists such as Kruder & Dorfmeister , Herbert , Ursula Rucker , Carl Craig , Hot Chip , Stateless , A Guy Called Gerald and many other internationally renowned artists.

In 1991, the so-called " 3-LUX Series " and " X-Mix Series " were released, a series of digital video clips and specially designed DJ sets.

In 1995 the " DJ Kicks Series" was launched. The aim was to create DJ mixes not only for the dance floor, but also for the home stereo system. Such mixes were u. a. Published by Kruder & Dorfmeister , Nightmares on Wax , Thievery Corporation , Tiga , Hot Chip , Carl Craig , Henrik Schwarz and the Stereo MCs . To date, 50 parts of this compilation have been published.

! K7's repertoire includes various types of current electronic music. After concentrating exclusively on the release of DJ mixes in the first few years, the company began to publish regular artist albums in 1996. Since then, K7 has been considered one of the most diverse labels in the electronics sector.

The sub-labels Rapster, Strut, Gold Dust Media and Ever also belong to the! K7 Label Group. Rapster and Gold Dust Media concentrate in their publications on the different variants of urban music. B. Records from artists such as Jazzy Jeff, Roy Ayers and Plant Life. Rapster works closely with the English label BBE on its releases and a large number of the releases were created in close cooperation between the two labels. At Ever, on the other hand, there are mainly independent publications. Strut Records , on the other hand, focuses on the re-release of various music from the 70s and 80s, from Afro Beat to Italian disco. They also worked on the release of Grandmaster Flash's first studio album in years for the summer of 2008 . Their most important contemporary bands include the Souljazz Orchestra from Ottawa, Canada, and Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area band.
