Elzhi (* 1979 ; real name Jason Powers ) is an American rapper and former member of the hip-hop group Slum Village .

Career

Elzhi started recording some songs with DJ Houseshoes in 1998. The EP Out Of Focus was released as the first release at the end of the recording process . A year later, the rapper recorded a few pieces with the group 9-2-5 Colony founded by Nick Speed and Magestik Legend. The joint material of the hip hop musicians was never published. After Big Tone got to know the soul singer and musician Dwele , who had attended the same school as Elzhi at times, the two founded together with Big Tone and 87, who were part of the hip-hop shop at the time and Lacks, The group Breakfast Club had met Elzhi in a studio. In 2000 they released the EP Breakfast Club .

In 2001 T3 and Baatin from the group Slum Village were working on their album Trinity (Past, Present and Future) . During the recording process, the group invited Elzhi to record some pieces with the rapper. The collaboration worked well, so Elzhi was offered the opportunity to become a member of the hip-hop group.

In 2004 Elzhi founded the Libido Sounds label together with Nick Speed . The rapper published the mixtape Witness My Growth on this platform . This was released as a double CD and contains exclusive contributions by J Dilla , some pieces from the EP Out Of Focus and songs that were written before 1997.

In April 2008 Elzhi published as part of his European tour with DJ House Shoes, Phat Kat and DJ December a tour album titled Euro Pass . The rapper's first solo album followed on August 12, 2008. It was released under the title The Preface and was recorded by Elzhi within two and a half weeks. In order to make previously unreleased solo and feature tracks accessible to fans, Elzhi released the mixtape The Leftovers (UnMixedTape) in December 2009 . It was only offered for free download and deliberately did not involve a mixtape DJ. A few days later Elzhi and T3 released the prequel EP Villa Manifesto EP as an online precursor to the sixth Slum Village album Villa Manifesto , which was released in July 2010 , due to the death of Slum Village member Baatin in August 2009 . Due to the large number of recordings by the rapper Baatin, he is posthumously represented on the EP on every song. Shortly after the release, Elzhi left Slum Village because of differences with RJ Rice.

In May 2011 the mixtape Elmatic was released both as a physical sound carrier and as a free download , a homage to the album Illmatic by New York rapper Nas . Elmatic was produced by Will Sessions. Elzhi released two videos for the release, Halftime and It Ain't Hard To Tell .

In 2013 Elzhi started a Kickstarter campaign to fund another album. After he received 37,000 US dollars within a short time , he broke off contact with the donors, who then threatened with a lawsuit. He only reappeared in 2016 and explained his silence with depression and an addiction . Shortly afterwards the promised work finally appeared under the name Lead Poison .
