history

The origins of Boot Camp Clik lie in the group Black Moon around the rapper Buckshot, who achieved a surprise success in 1993 with the single "Who Got The Props" and thus reached position 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 . This caught the attention of Priority Records , which were mainly active in the West Coast hip hop field. Although this was just beginning to dominate hip-hop music , the label also wanted to be present on the east coast of the United States of America . Buckshot founded the imprint Duck Down together with a friend, Dru-Ha, under the leadership of Priority.

As a result, the entire music of the groups and solo artists listed above was published via this. The first album that appeared with the participation of all 8 members under the name Boot Camp Clik was 1997 "For The People". It peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 and sold a little more than 250,000 copies in total.

After further projects that were published separately, the compilation "Boot Camp Clik's Greatest Hits: Basic Training" was released in 2000 . This is a compilation of songs that were previously only included on each member's album.

Then Duck Down decided to part with Priority Records due to declining success and from then on operated independently with a distribution contract with Koch Records . The first music released in this way was the second album under the name Boot Camp Clik, "The Chosen Few", although the actual member rock was missing.

The members then returned to their projects individually or in small groups, so that the third work, “The Last Stand”, was not published until 2006. While working on this album, more songs were created than necessary, so that in 2007, after a joint tour of all 8 members under the name "Casualties of War", they appeared as the fourth album.

As before, the rappers stayed connected afterwards, but made their music under their own names or those of their groups.

The group was decimated by the death of Sean Price in 2015 and consisted of only 7 members.

style

Even if the group often appears separately from each other, they always share a common style.

This starts with clothing, which is determined by robust Timberland boots and thick jackets or hooded sweaters, often in military camouflage colors .

In addition, the sound of the music is determined by the production team Da Beatminerz , who were exclusively responsible for the background music for the raps in the early phase of Boot Camp Clik. In the meantime, other producers are also employed, but attention is always paid to rich bass and rather minimalist samples , so that a dark, serious and aggressive atmosphere is created.

Life in the poorer parts of Brooklyn is treated lyrically.
