James Gosling

James Gosling (born May 19, 1955 in Calgary , Alberta , Canada ) is one of the forefathers of the object-oriented and platform-independent programming language Java . He also invented the NeWS window system and the Gosling Emacs and was one of the developers of the Star Seven microcomputer .

Life

He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 1977 and received his Ph.D. 1983 from Carnegie Mellon University . The title of his dissertation is Algebraic Constraints .

From 1984 to April 2010, James Gosling was employed by Sun Microsystems and from 2005 was the CTO of the product development group.

On April 2, 2010, James Gosling left Sun Microsystems (now acquired by Oracle ). He worked at Google for a few months before working as chief software architect for a small Californian company.

James Gosling has been working as a Distinguished Engineer at Amazon Web Services since May 2017 .

Awards

In 2007, Gosling was named Officer of the Order of Canada . This is the second tier of the highest honor a civilian can receive in Canada. In 2019 he became a Fellow of the Computer History Museum .
