Paul Winterstein

Paul Winterstein (born April 14, 1876 in Gitschin (Bohemia), † May 25, 1945 in Theresienstadt , Czechoslovakia) was an Austrian professional officer.

Life

After attending secondary school, Winterstein, the youngest brother of Robert Winterstein , attended the Austro-Hungarian Technical Military Academy and the Austro-Hungarian War School in Vienna . Winterstein was a career officer from 1896. During the First World War he was a lieutenant colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army from 1915 and a colonel in the general staff from 1917 . First he was with the VII Corps Command and then as Chief of Staff of the Innsbruck Rifle Division (probably 44th Landw-InfTrDiv). He later worked as a department head at the Imperial and Royal Ministry of National Defense and commanded field artillery regiments 13 (Sopron) and 32 (Lemberg) .

In the Third Reich, Winterstein was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto because of his Jewish origins , where he arrived on October 10, 1942. His brother Max was also deported there. In Theresienstadt, Winterstein was known as a "prominent prisoner". Winterstein died of pneumonia in Theresienstadt in May 1945 shortly after the ghetto was liberated by the Red Army .
