Karl-Troop Cross

The Karl Troop Cross was donated to the army on December 13, 1916 by Emperor Karl I of Austria-Hungary .

Prerequisites for the award of the cross were at least 12 weeks service at the front and participation in at least one battle.

The appearance of the Karl Troop Cross is reminiscent of the design of the Army Cross for 1813/14 . The medal has the shape of a paw cross and is made of zinc . A laurel wreath can be seen between the arms of the cross . In the upper cross arm the words GRATI , in the two middle PRINCEPS ET PATRIA and in the lower CAROLVS IMP.ET REX  ((In gratitude, rulers and fatherland Karl Kaiser und König). On the reverse side in the upper cross arm side by side the Austrian imperial crown and the Hungarian royal crown. Underneath the letter C  ((Carolus).) On the central arms the inscription VITAM ET SANGVINEM  ((Life and Blood)) and in the lower cross arm the Roman number MDCCCCXVI (1916).

The award was worn on a light red ribbon with red and white side stripes on the left chest.

A total of 651,000 pieces were awarded.

In the First Republic , people who had received an Austro-Hungarian bravery medal , the Karl Troop Cross or the Wound Medal were entitled to wear crossed swords on the ribbon of the War Memorial Medal in accordance with the ordinance (Federal Law Gazette No. 507/33) of 10 November 1933 .
