The wounded medal ( ung. Sebesültek Érme , colloquially also known as the wounded medal ) was donated by Emperor Charles I of Austria-Hungary on August 12, 1917 and could be awarded to officers , non-commissioned officers and men who were or were wounded in the war as a result of fighting became disabled.

Appearance

The round medal was designed by medalist Richard Placht and shows in the middle the portrait of the donor, turned to the right. The inscription CAROLVS above the head and two crossed laurel branches below the picture . On the back is LAESO MILITI (The Wounded Soldier) and the number MCMXVIII . The medal was made of fine zinc or bronze, the zinc version has a diameter of 37 mm and a weight of 24.4 g.

Carrying method

There were a total of six different ribbons, which differed depending on the number of wounds or the severity of the injuries. War invalids wore the ribbon with a blood-red stripe, while one to five wounds were marked by one to five blood-red central stripes.

The award was worn on the ribbon on the left chest.

In the First Republic , persons who had received an Austro-Hungarian Medal for Bravery , the Karl Troop Cross or the Wound Medal were entitled to wear crossed swords on the ribbon of the War Memorial Medal in accordance with the ordinance (Federal Law Gazette No. 507/33) of November 10, 1933 .
