Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević (born February 17, 1865 in Senj , † October 29, 1908 in Sarajevo ) was a Croatian writer and one of the most important poets of realism.

Life's work

Kranjčević was born in Senj under Mount Nehaj . Although he attended grammar school, he did not graduate from high school due to his temperament. He then attended the Pontificium Collegium Germanico et Hungaricum in Rome to become a priest. He left it very quickly because he did not feel the inner call to the priest. However, this very short stay left a lasting impression on his subsequent works. In Zagreb he attended a one-year teacher training course. He then went to Bosnia-Herzegovina to practice there, as he saw no future in Croatia. His most important stations in life were Mostar , Livno , Bijeljina and Sarajevo . There he not only earned his living, but also matured in literary terms.

He published his first poem in Hrvatska vila ( Zavjet , 1883) before Kranjčević returned to Rome a month or two later. The editorial staff, headed by Eugen Kumičić at the time , was enthusiastic about the hitherto unknown artist. From Rome he sent two more poems to the Sloboda in Šušac ( Pozdrav and Senj-grad , 1884). When he returned from Rome, Kranjčević published one of his most important works ( Noć na Foru ) in Vijenac and then his first collection of poems in Senj ( Bugarkinje , 1884).

In just one year of his artistic work, he had defined the entire spectrum of his artistic work and mapped out his artistic career. Home - people - space are the subject areas around which his works revolve. Following this clear thematic delimitation, it has not changed, but has grown and matured in its artistic expression.
