Kurt van Haaren

Kurt van Haaren (born July 19, 1938 in Emmerich ; † July 13, 2005 in Delmenhorst ) was a German trade unionist . From 1982 to 2001 he was chairman of the German Postal Union (DPG).

Life

Van Haaren studied from 1953 to 1955 as a post boy with a scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation at the Dortmund Social Academy . In 1964 van Haaren became union secretary at the DPG district executive in Düsseldorf . In 1968 he moved to Frankfurt am Main as the collective bargaining secretary to the DPG main board. In 1977 he became chairman of the Bremen / Weser-Ems district board and a member of the DPG main board.

In the 1980s and 1990s he was involved in the DPG's fight against the privatization of the Deutsche Bundespost . Van Haaren was not only active in Germany, but also in international trade union politics. As President of the Communication International and the Union Network International (UNI) he was committed to the worldwide recognition of the rights of trade unionists.
