Career

In the club

Boško Balaban played as a striker . He started his career at NK Rijeka , where he played from 1995 to 2000. After he was the top scorer in the Croatian league with 15 goals in the 1999/2000 season, he moved to Dinamo Zagreb . There he was again top scorer in the following season and then moved to the English club Aston Villa for a transfer fee of 9 million euros . There he could not prevail and only came on nine missions, so he returned to Dinamo Zagreb on loan, where he was able to build on his old successes. His contract with Aston Villa was canceled anyway, so that in 2004 he moved to the Belgian club FC Bruges on a free transfer, where he had a significant share in winning the Belgian championship in 2005 with eleven goals this season . In 2007 he finally moved to Dinamo Zagreb and signed a contract for 2 years. After his contract expired in 2009, Balaban moved to the Malaysian club Selangor FA , where he ended his career a year later.

In the national team

Balaban made his debut in the Croatian national soccer team on August 16, 2000 against Slovakia . Since then, he has played 27 games for his country and scored nine goals. At the 2002 World Cup , he was in the squad of his national team, but did not play a game. He was nominated again for the 2006 World Cup .

Boško Balaban, Darijo Srna and Ivica Olić were suspended from the Croatian Football Association for one game each after returning too late from a discotheque to the hotel just before an international match.

He returned to Dinamo Zagreb in August 2007 after Bruges signed top scorer François Sterchele. Balaban was nicknamed Super Bosko among the Bruges fans when he scored four goals in one game.
