The 2. HNL 1997/98 was the seventh season of the second highest Croatian football league .

mode

The league was divided into five seasons for the last time this season: North (Croatian sjever ), East (Croatian istok ), West (Croatian Zapad ), South (Croatian jug ) and center (Croatian središte ). In each season, two rounds were played against each other, divided into a round two. The season winners, as well as the second of the center season, then played a climber to the 1st HNL in 1998/99 .

The five beach chairs were retained, but were downgraded to the status of the third division from the 1998/99 season. In the following season the 2nd HNL was carried out with 19 teams in only one group. The unqualified teams then played in the 3rd HNL .
