Leon Benko [ lɛɔn bɛnkɔ ] (born November 11, 1983 in Varaždin , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian football player .

Career

From the 2003/04 season the striker played in the 1st Croatian league for his youth club NK Varteks Varaždin and became a regular there for the 2004/05 season. In the 2005/06 season he contributed with his 14 goals in 26 games significantly to the third place of his team in the championship. He had previously scored six goals in five games in the UI Cup in summer 2005. For the club, he played a total of 68 first division games in three seasons and scored 18 goals.

The left winger was also an important player in the Croatian U21 national team. He was used twice in the senior team at a friendship tournament in Hong Kong in 2013 .

For the 2006/07 season, Leon Benko moved to the Bundesliga for 1. FC Nürnberg , where he signed a contract until 2010. At the club, however, he could not prevail and was only used as a substitute player occasionally. After all, he was substituted on seven times in the first year, but in the following year he only made three short appearances without scoring a goal. Benko's highlight of the 2007/08 season were his four UEFA Cup appearances and in particular his equalizer for the 2-2 final on November 29, 2007 against eventual cup winners Zenit Saint Petersburg just two minutes after being substituted on. At the end of the 2007/08 season, 1. FC Nürnberg was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga and Benko moved to Standard Liège in Belgium . Just one year later he switched to KV Kortrijk within Belgium .
