Göran Göransson (born May 7, 1956 in Täby ) is a former Swedish football player and coach . The multiple young national player was able to win the Svenska Cup twice in the course of his career .

Career

Göransson started playing football at Vällingby AIK when he was eight . His talent was discovered a short time later and in 1968 the multiple Swedish champion Djurgårdens IF brought him into his youth department. The midfielder only stayed there for two seasons and moved to the youth team of arch-rivals AIK in Stockholm in 1970 , where his older brother kicked the ball. With the youth team he won the St. Erikscupen , Stockholm's most important youth football competition.

In 1973 AIK took over the young player in the men's team, but initially he was only used in the reserve team of the traditional club. On April 13, 1974, he made his debut in the Allsvenskan at the age of 17 . In the 1-0 away win in Nya Ullevi over GAIS , he replaced the injured Sanny Åslund in the starting line-up. In his first two years he commuted between the reserve and the first division team and was therefore only used irregularly in the Swedish elite series.

In the 1976 season Göransson succeeded under the new coach Lars-Oscar Nilsson the breakthrough. He had already trained him in his youth at AIK and set him up in all 26 games of the season. In addition to two goals in the league, he was also able to enter the list of goalscorers in the cup final. In the first game, a 1-1 draw against Landskrona BoIS , he scored the goal for AIK, which paved the way for a 3-0 success in the replay. In the 1976/77 European Cup Winners' Cup , he finally made his European debut in the 2-1 defeat against Galatasaray SK . On the last day of the season he broke his arm in a duel against GIF Sundsvall in a collision with the opposing goalkeeper.

In the following season Gunnar Nordahl took over the coaching position at AIK. Under the new coach, Göransson played one of his best seasons and was also on the note of the Swedish national team coach "Åby" Ericson . Although he was part of the squad several times, he could not get past the strong competitor in the position in left midfield, Eine Fredriksson . In 1979 he was closest to his national team debut when he was to be nominated for the European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg , but missed the call of the national coach and instead of his team-mate from AIK Leif Lindén came for his only appearance in the Swedish national jersey.

1979 was also a negative climax in Göransson's career at the club. After several injury-related failures, the team did not find the strength of previous years and had to start relegation to the second-rate division 2 after an unsuccessful fight to stay in the league. However, the team dominated the second division in the following season and managed to return directly to the Swedish elite series. There, with the newly signed coach Rolf Zetterlund , the relegation games against Djurgårdens IF managed to stay up.

Göransson received an offer from Spain during his semester abroad as a teacher in the winter of 1982. The lower-class club CD Tenerife wanted to tie the Swede to itself, but Göransson turned down the offer. In the following season he returned to the top tier of Swedish football with AIK. Partly used as a left defender, he reached the championship finals with the team as first in the regular season. In the first round, the team was able to prevail against Hammarby IF and in the 5-2 opening win, Göransson also entered the list of goalscorers. In the semifinals, however, IFK Göteborg proved too strong. A 3-0 defeat in the first leg could be countered by a 2-0 second leg success through goals from Ove Rübsamen and Thomas Johansson , but this was not enough to reach the final.

Also in the 1984 season Göransson was a regular player and missed only one game of the season due to an illness in the summer. In the following season, the Stockholm player played all season games. Although the final round was missed in 1985 , the team made it into the final in the Swedish Cup. There AIK met Östers IF . After there was no winner at the end of extra time, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Here AIK goalkeeper Bernt Ljung outgrew himself and saved three opposing penalty kicks. This Göransson achieved the second cup triumph of his career.

In the league, Göransson reached the championship finals with AIK in the following season as third in the table. After he had already played all the games in regular time, he was also on the field in all the finals. In the semifinals, the team prevailed against IFK Göteborg after a 0-0 home draw with a 1-1 draw after a goal by Björn Kindlund . In the final, the team from Stockholm met Malmö FF . In the first leg, after a goal from Mats Olausson, they won 1-0, the title was missed by a 2-5 defeat in the second leg. After 248 first division games and ten finals, Göransson left the club after the defeat.

Göransson moved to third division club Väsby IK . Under coach Åslund, his former teammate from his early AIK days, he made promotion to the second division with the club in 1987. The club was able to establish itself in the second division and in 1989 there was a reunion with AIK in the cup when Bäsby IK prevailed 2-1.

In 1990 Göransson returned to AIK as a playing assistant coach. He came to 20 more missions for AIK in the Allsvenskan before he finally ended his career. After another year as an assistant in the coaching bench, he left AIK again to work for a season as a coach for the amateur club IFK Österåker .

In 1994 he took over the coaching position at the fourth division Täby IS . After two places in the front midfield, the second division Hammarby IF hired him in 1996 to create the return to the Allsvenskan. Göransson narrowly missed the goal when the team failed after a second place in the northern relay only in the relegation round at Trelleborgs FF . In 1998 he went to his former game station Väsby IK as a coach. He also led the third division team into the relegation round for promotion. Again he failed there, against Gefle IF a 1-1 draw was followed by a 0-1 defeat in the second leg.

In 2000 Göransson switched to Svenska Fotbollförbundet . In the following two years he coached the Swedish U21 team. He then took over the post of match observer for the senior national team in his home country.
