Jason Philip Shackell (born September 27, 1983 in Stevenage ) is an English football player . He can be used in a wide variety of defense positions and is currently under contract with Derby County after many years at his training club, Norwich City .

Athletic career

Norwich City

Shackell went through the youth academy of Norwich City and came after signing a five-year contract in January 2003 on April 5, 2003 in the second division against Derby County for his first competitive game. He represented on the left -back position the short term virus diseased Adam Drury , although the favored position he future more in central defense was to be found. In the promotion season 2003/04 Shackell was represented in six league games, but was then long disregarded in the following Premier League season 2004/05 . It wasn't until February 28, 2005 that he made his debut against Manchester City in the English top division. It ended with a 2-3 home defeat, but Shackell was suddenly a regular in central defense in the remaining games. In the end, however, he had to accept relegation to the second division with the "Canaries".

Further development steps were initially absent in the Football League Championship 2005/06 ; a regular series of injuries caused Shackell to be out for four months from September 2005. He underwent ankle surgery in the summer of 2006, returned to the team permanently for the 2006/07 season and scored his first goal on October 17, 2006 in a 1-0 away win over Birmingham City . A return to the Premier League was - as in the previous year - out of reach. Under coach Peter Grant , Shackell was promoted to team captain at the beginning of the 2007/08 season and signed a new three-year contract in October 2007. A failed start to the season - including a red card for Shackell in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers (0: 2) - quickly changed the framework. Grant received the discharge papers and was replaced by Glenn Roeder , who in turn withdrew the captaincy from Shackell in December 2007. Roeder signed a number of new defensive players after the close relegation and so the ex-team captain and key player even lost his regular place at Norwich City at the beginning of the 2008/09 season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

On September 1, 2008, Shackell moved to second division rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee of about one million pounds , where he signed a four-year contract. In the "Wolves", however, he did not prevail, was only three times in the starting lineup in twelve league appearances. On February 10, 2009, he returned to Norwich to end the season on loan. He succeeded in the "feat" of having been jointly responsible for relegation to third division in Norwich as well as having completed enough games for the Wolves to receive the medal of honor for promotion to the Premier League. In Wolverhampton, however, he remained unconsidered and got in August 2009 the opportunity to get to the end of the 2009/10 season, the match practice with his new loaner club Doncaster Rovers .

Barnsley FC

In May 2010 Shackell left the Wolves for good and signed a new contract with Barnsley FC . In Barnsley , he became a top performer and was used by coach Mark Robins as team captain.

Derby County and Burnley FC

On June 21, 2011 Jason Shackell signed a three-year contract with league rivals Derby County .

For the 2012/13 season Shackell joined Burnley FC. He made his debut in his club's 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers on August 18, 2012.

After three seasons at Burnley, he returned to Derby County on July 23, 2015.
