Jesse Pekka Joronen (born March 21, 1993 in Rautjärvi ) is a Finnish football goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Italian first division club Brescia Calcio since July 2019 . He has been the Finnish national goalkeeper since January 2013 .

Club career

Fulham FC and loan shops

Jesse Joronen, who was born and raised in Rautjärvi , began his football training at the local club Simpeleen Urheilijat , from where the goalkeeper moved to the youth academy of the English first division club FC Fulham in 2009. In June 2010 he signed his first professional three-year contract with the Cottagers , but stayed with the juniors for the time being. In May 2012 he extended his contract for two years.

On October 25, 2012 he was loaned to sixth division Maidenhead United for a month . The loan business was then expanded and he was used in eight league games for the Magpies by January 2013 . After his return he played for the first time in Fulham's U23 team. On February 22, 2013, he moved on loan for a month to fifth division Cambridge United . The next day, the agreement was dissolved again and Joronen returned to London as he refused to be named as a substitute goalkeeper in the matchday squad.

On May 3, 2013 he returned to his home country Finland, where he was loaned to the first division club FC Lahti until August 2013 . He made his debut two days later (4th matchday) in a 1-0 home win against Kuopion PS . With the Mustat kuhnurit he established himself as a regular goalkeeper and returned to Fulham after 18 league appearances. In the next 2013/14 season he only played seven times for the U23s in Premier League 2, as he had to share working time with various goalkeepers such as Marcus Bettinelli , Marek Rodák or Max Oberschmidt .

At the beginning of the following season 2014/15 he was given a new two-year contract and promoted to the first team. Head coach Felix Magath made it possible for him on August 9, 2014 (1st matchday), he made his debut in the first team in the 1: 2 away defeat against Ipswich Town . After the first four league games of the season with Joronen in goal were all lost, he was ousted by the one year older Bettinelli and veteran Gábor Király .

On October 17, 2014, he moved to fourth division Accrington Stanley on loan . The change outside of the transfer phase was possible because Accrington's loan goalkeeper Aaron Chapman was injured and was recalled by his club. The next day (13th matchday) he was in the 1: 2 away defeat against FC Stevenage between the posts and he was also used in the following league games. In his fourth appearance against FC Morecambe on October 31 (matchday 16), he dislocated his kneecap and was injured for several months. Fulham ordered him back immediately and Joronen did not return to the field this season.

After being completely left out at the Cottagers , he moved to the fourth division FC Stevenage again on August 27, 2015 in a loan deal until January 2016 . There he made his debut two days later (5th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge . At Boro , he rose to become a regular goalkeeper and top performer in a very short time. He achieved national attention on October 17, 2015 (13th matchday) in a 2-1 home win against Wycombe Wanderers , when he overcame opposing goalkeeper Matt Ingram with a long tee shot outside his own penalty area in the 10th minute and so that scored a 1-0 lead in the meantime. Joronen injured his stomach in a 3-0 home win against Gillingham FC in the first round of the FA Cup and then returned to Fulham FC. There he only played four league games for the reserve after his return, but signed a new one-year contract on May 12, 2016.

He stayed with Fulham in the 2016/17 season , but was only third choice and played three EFL Cup games and played in seven reserve league games. Joronen was offered a new contract again in May 2017, but refused to renew and on June 30, 2016, he left Fulham FC after eight years on a free transfer.

Breakthrough in Denmark

On July 10, 2017, he signed a two-year contract with the Danish first division club AC Horsens . He made his debut on July 14, 2017 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 away win against Aarhus GF . With Horsens he had an excellent start to the 2017/18 season , to which he was able to contribute with good performances. This also drew the attention of larger clubs to the Finn and on December 15, 2017, the league competitor FC Copenhagen presented Jesse Joronen as a new addition for the upcoming 2018/19 season . This season, Joronen appeared in 28 league games for Horsens.

On July 1, 2018, he signed a five-year contract with record champions FC Copenhagen. He made his debut on July 19, 2018 in a 1-1 draw against Kuopion PS in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League . In this game he lost two teeth after a collision with his team-mate Denis Vavro . He was quickly given preference over the experienced Stephan Andersen and played a total of 31 league games in the 2018/19 season. With Copenhagen he won the Danish championship.

Brescia Calcio

On July 11, 2019, the Italian Serie A promoted Brescia Calcio signed Joronen for a transfer fee of five million euros as the new goalkeeper and provided him with a three-year contract. He made his debut in a 1-2 cup defeat after extra time against AC Perugia . With the Rondinelle , he got into the relegation ranks early in the 2019/20 season , but managed to impress himself with good performances.

National team

Jesse Joronen represented his home country in the U17 and U19 age groups before he played for the U21 national team for the first time in June 2011 . By June 2014, he played eleven international matches for this selection and wore the captain's armband several times.

On January 23, 2013 he made his debut - Joronen had not yet made his professional debut - in the 3-1 friendly win against Thailand for the Finnish national team . In the next five years he made only a few international matches, as he was often only the replacement behind number one Lukáš Hrádecký . This was also the case with the qualification for the European Championship 2021 , in which the Huuhkajat qualified for a final round for the first time. He was only used in the last game against Greece , before which the qualification was already made.
