Peter Andrew Beardsley (born January 18, 1961 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a retired English football player who played professionally both nationally and internationally for more than fifteen years.

Career

After Beardsley spent his youth at his hometown club Newcastle United , he played at Gillingham , Cambridge United , Burnley and Oxford . He then gained greater fame through good performances at Carlisle United and the Canadian Vancouver Whitecaps . After a brief stint at Manchester United , where he was only used in a league cup game , he rejoined the Magpies at the beginning of the 1983/84 season .

The striker was very popular with Newcastle spectators because of his speed and technical skills in the game directly behind the attackers, scoring 61 goals in four years. In his first season he succeeded in a team led by Kevin Keegan (in his last season) as team captain of promotion to the first division.

During his time in Newcastle Beardsley became a regular for the England team and stormed together with Gary Lineker , who praised Beardsley as the best strike partner for him. England scored seven goals during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and Lineker contributed six goals which earned him the top scorer's crown. The only goal that Lineker didn't score came from Beardsley in the second round against Paraguay , who were defeated 3-0.

In 1987 Beardsley moved for a transfer fee of 1.9 million British pounds to Anfield Road for Liverpool FC under the then coach Kenny Dalglish . There he won his first English title in the first season when Liverpool won the championship without a loss. Beardsley became the favorite player of the spectators in the Kop stands because of his accuracy . With only two defeats this season, however, the end was disappointing when the 0-1 defeat in the FA Cup final against FC Wimbledon prevented the double.

Liverpool won the FA Cup the following year, but were unable to defend the championship title with a goal against Arsenal in the final minute of their last game of the season . In 1990 Liverpool was able to take the championship back, but Dalglish resigned immediately afterwards and Beardsley had to realize that he would no longer be a regular under the new coach Graeme Souness , although he was able to defend his place in the English national team and during the European Championship in 1988 and the 1990 World Cup was used.

Beardsley moved within the city to rival Everton FC , which would normally have caused a great deal of antipathy among Liverpool supporters. This did not happen because the fans could not understand the fact that Beardsley had lost his regular position. At Everton, he continued to perform well, scoring 25 goals in two years, but not winning titles.

In 1993 Beardsley returned home to Newcastle when his former teammate and strike partner Kevin Keegan took over the sporting direction. He was called back to the English national team and ended his international career in 1996 after a total of 59 internationals. During his second engagement in Newcastle, Beardsley built on earlier successes and led the club as captain to the runner-up in 1996 and narrowly missed his third English league title in the fight against Manchester United. A year later he left Newcastle and joined the Bolton Wanderers . Differences with Colin Todd meant that he could not establish himself there and after he was loaned to Manchester City , Beardsley then moved to Fulham before he then ended his football career at the lower-class Hartlepool United and retired at the age of 38.

Due to his services to English football, Beardsley was awarded the Order of the British Empire as an MBE in 1995.

Today he is on the coaching staff of the Newcastle United Football Academy. He is married and has a daughter and a son.
