Westerveld prevailed against his US competitor Brad Friedel and became number one between the posts of the Reds . In the following years he should collect many titles with the club. In 2001 they won the FA Cup , the League Cup , the UEFA Cup , the FA Community Shield and the European Supercup . Westerveld did not miss any of these finals and was on the field for the full season in all finals.

Liverpool also started the new season with Westerveld. But shortly before the end of the transfer period, he left the team. The reason was that coach Gerard Houllier with Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland undertook two new goalkeeper after Westerveld in the encounter on Matchday with the Bolton Wanderers made a mistake that cost the win. After the great successes with Liverpool, he moved to Real Sociedad San Sebastián in Spain in the 2001/02 season . In Sociedad Westerveld was number two behind Alberto López for a long time before coach John Toshack placed his trust in the Dutchman from matchday 18. In 2002/03 they narrowly missed the championship and came in second behind Real Madrid . The following year, Westerveld suffered the same fate as his competitor López two years earlier. The goalkeeper was the undisputed number one until match day 15, before coach Raynald Denoueix replaced him with López. Sociedad had previously failed to win seven games in a row.

In the summer before the new season Westerveld was loaned to the competitor RCD Mallorca , but where he could not get past the young Moyá . In July 2005, the Dutchman moved back to England to play for Portsmouth FC . As early as February on, the club officials lent to Everton , where Westerveld played until the end of April 2006 before going back to Portsmouth. There it was decided to give up the Dutchman again. In summer the goalkeeper moved back to Spain, to UD Almería . With the then second division side, Westerveld made it to the Spanish upper house. Subsequently, however, his contract was not extended so that he remained without a club until September. He was finally signed by the Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam , where he immediately replaced Cor Varkevisser , who was still guarding the Rotterdam goal for the first three matchdays. In the summer of 2008, both parties parted ways again. After a year break, Westerveld decided to hire a club again and signed a contract with the Italian club AC Monza Brianza in the third highest Italian division, the Lega Pro Prima Divisione .
