Matthew "Matt" Muirhead Gillies (born August 12, 1921 in Loganlea , † December 24, 1998 in Nottingham ) was a Scottish football player and coach . As a player he worked for Motherwell FC , Bolton Wanderers and Leicester City . In his coaching career, he oversaw Leicester City and Nottingham Forest .

Career as a player

In 1946 Matt Gillies moved from his Scottish homeland to the English first division team Bolton Wanderers . With his new club, he just barely achieved relegation in the Football League First Division 1946/47 in the first year . The best placement so far in his time in Bolton came in the 1950/51 season with eighth place in the table. In the following season, the team increased this performance with fifth place. The 31-year-old Gillies then moved to the second division Leicester City . In the 1953/54 season he reached promotion to the First Division 1954/55 with his new team as first in the table . There, however, the newcomer rose directly from the table penultimate. Gillies ended his playing career after the season.

Career as a coach

After his playing career Gillies was active in the coaching staff of Leicester City before he took over the coaching post on November 1, 1958 at the club. In 1959 he managed a transfer coup with the commitment of the 21-year-old Gordon Banks from Chesterfield FC . In 1961 he reached the 1961 FA Cup final with his team , but failed 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur . In 1963 Leicester moved into the final of the FA Cup again, but the team could not secure the title after the 1: 3 against Manchester United again.

Gillies won the first title for it in the League Cup final in 1964. Stoke City was defeated 0-0 and 3-2. The title defense failed a year later after a 2: 3 and 0: 0 against Chelsea in the final. Gillies was also able to establish the club in the First Division , and Leicester even played for the title for a long time in the Football League First Division 1962/63 . In the end it was enough for a good fourth place in the table. In the years to come, Gillies secured the club's relegation before he stopped working in late 1968 and moved to Nottingham Forest a short time later .

Forest had become runner-up in the First Division 1966/67 , but could not hold this level afterwards. In the 1968/69 season, relegation threatened when Gillies took over the coaching post in early 1969. The league was ultimately just secured and in the two following years the place in the lower third of the table was enough for further participation in the first division. The season in the First Division 1971/72 ultimately led to relegation, but Gillies remained in office in the coming year. Only when the start in the Second Division did not go as expected did the separation take place on October 14, 1972.

Matt Gillies died in Nottingham on December 24, 1998 at the age of 77.
