Klaus Zähringer

Klaus Zähringer (born October 17, 1939 in Königsberg ) is a former German sports shooter who competed for the all-German team and for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Zähringer's family fled Königsberg at the end of the Second World War and settled in Stuttgart. Klaus Zähringer, who competed for the Stuttgart Rifle Guild , won the 1959 European Championship in Milan in a three-position battle with a small-bore rifle , setting a world record with 1,149 rings. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 , Victor Schamburkin from the Soviet Union set this world record and won the gold medal in front of his compatriot Marat Nyýazow ; with 1139 rings, Klaus Zähringer won the bronze medal in Rome.

In 1963 at the European Championships in Oslo, Zähringer finished second in the three-position battle behind his compatriot Bernd Klingner . In the team competition, the two won the title together with Peter Kohnke and Karl Wenk . At the Olympic Games in 1964 , Zähringer competed with the free rifle (14th place) and with the small bore rifle (22nd place). In the following years, Zähringer was still a member of the German national team and won bronze at the European Championships in 1965 and silver at the European Championships in 1969. In 1967 he improved his personal best in the three-position battle to 1,161 rings. Between 1959 and 1969 he achieved a total of eight German championship titles in various disciplines. In 1970 Zähringer won another individual medal at an international championship: at the World Championships in Phoenix, he received the bronze medal in the prone position.

On December 9, 1960, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements.
