Karl Wenk (marksman)

Karl Wenk (born December 20, 1934 in Lörrach ) is a former German sports shooter. The multiple European and world champion has won numerous national titles and is one of the most successful sport shooters in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Life

After the war, Karl Wenk actively helped to set up the shooting club in his home town of Brombach . The trainer Fritz Zimmermann brought the young marksman to the rifle club in Rheinfelden .

In his career, Wenk was 16 times German shooting champion, four-time European and two-time world champion. At the world championship in Cairo on October 12, 1962, he won the team classification together with Bernd Klingner , Peter Kohnke and Klaus Zähringer and won the 60-shot prone fight with the small -bore rifle in 594 of 600 possible rings. Due to his success, he was appointed to the national team in 1957 and took part in three Summer Olympic Games . In 1960 at the games in Rome he was not used as a substitute. In the international competition in Finland in 1961 he achieved a German record with 390 small caliber rings on his knees. In 1963 he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for his outstanding sporting achievements . His best finish at the Olympic Games was a seventh place in a closely spaced top field at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the German Championships on September 4, 1967, he even set a world record with 600 out of a possible 600 points in the small-caliber prone fight . Wenk was a member of the German national team for 14 years and withdrew from top-class sport in the early 1970s.

After his sporting career, he worked in his father's roller engraving factory Karl Wenk GmbH in Brombach, where he also lives. A street was named after him in the industrial park in the north of Brombach. Wenk is married and has three children.
