Clara Reeve

Clara Reeve (* 1729 in Ipswich ; † December 3, 1807 ibid) was a British writer who wrote in the style of the Gothic novel .

Life

Reeve published in 1777 under the influence of Horace Walpole's novel Das Schloss von Otranto (English original version: The Castle of Otranto ) her first novel The champion of virtue . Other role models are Samuel Richardson and Henry Mackenzie .

Her two-volume work The progress of romance (1785) was a study of the genre of the novel. Clara Reeve died in Ipswich on December 3, 1807.
