Titus Malachi Bramble (born July 31, 1981 in Ipswich ) is a former English football player . The 1.88-meter-tall central defender was most recently under contract with AFC Sunderland in the Premier League and was known for his physically oriented style of play.

Athletic career

Bramble took the first steps in organized football in his hometown near Ipswich Town and made his debut in the professional team at the age of only 17, which was active in the second-rate First Division at the time . After the "Tractor Boys" had succeeded in promotion to the Premier League in 2000 , Bramble captured a regular place in the team, which surprisingly reached fifth place and in the following season 2001/02 in the UEFA Cup after victories against Torpedo Moscow and Helsingborgs IF only failed at Inter Milan . Despite these European success, Ipswich Town rose from the English top division again in the same year, whereupon Bramble, who had come to several appearances in the English U-21 selection during this time , for a transfer fee of six million pounds to Newcastle United moved on.

The newcomer immediately claimed a leadership role in Bobby Robson's team , but was always rated ambivalently in view of his simple style of play, which is limited to defensive behavior and is extremely robust in duels - negative votes rated Bramble at the end of the 2003 season / 04 as the worst player in the Premier League. This was offset by a number of important goals, including the decisive goal in the 1-0 win against Chelsea , which qualified for a place in the UI Cup in 2006 , and a goal in the first leg of qualifying for the UEFA Cup against FK Ventspils , who after another good defensive performance at 0-0 in the second leg meant advancing into the main round. In the further course of the competition he suffered an injury against Eintracht Frankfurt in December 2006, which caused his lower leg to swell to twice its normal size and had to be treated as an inpatient. Although he returned to central defense at the end of January 2007 to the side of Steven Taylor , but showed after solid performances especially in the disappointing 2-2 defeat against AZ Alkmaar a poor performance, whereupon coach Glenn Roeder took him from the team. Especially after the return of Craig Moore and the persistence of his rivals Taylor and Oguchi Onyewu , he no longer played a role in the further planning of Newcastle United.

Bramble joined the first division competitor Wigan Athletic free of charge in June 2007 and signed a three-year contract there. Contrary to his time in Newcastle, he quickly became a crowd favorite in his new home, to which the equalizer to 1-1 at Liverpool on January 2, 2008 contributed. Coach Steve Bruce promoted him for the first time in a league cup game against his ex-club Ipswich Town to team captain and this took on more and more a key role in the defense center in the "Latics". The 2008/09 season developed into the personal best season for Bramble, which was rewarded at the end with the award for club player of the year. Speculations about a possible move ended in July 2009 with the defender signing a new contract until the end of the 2011/12 season. For the 2010/11 season Bramble moved to Sunderland AFC .
