Steven Vincent Taylor (born January 23, 1986 in London ) is an English football player . He is a central defender , but can also be used as a full -back.

Born in London, he moved with his family to Whitley Bay in North Tyneside when he was two years old .

Player career

Taylor started his career as a center forward. In 1998 he was deployed there due to injury-related failures in the defense. Due to his successful defensive work, he was no longer used as a striker.

In November 2001 Taylor played at the Walker International Tournament for the England U16 national team and was named player of the tournament there. Because of this performance, he signed his professional contract with Newcastle United in July 2002. This season he was used for the first time in the reserve team of the club.

In March 2003 Taylor qualified with the English U17 team for the European Championship. At the tournament he scored his first two goals in the national dress against Slovakia . It was also used in the 2003 Junior World Cup .

Taylor was loaned to Wycombe Wanderers for a month in December 2003 to gain first-team experience. He made his league debut in a 1-1 draw against Notts County on December 13, 2003. During his time at Wycombe, he played six games and returned to Newcastle on January 11, 2004 as scheduled.

Thanks to his good performance at the U20 World Cup in Dubai, Taylor was now also used in England's U21 selection.

On March 25, 2004 Taylor finally got his first appearance at Newcastle United in the UEFA Cup . He played his first full game and thus his first Premier League game on March 28, 2004 against Bolton Wanderers . Taylor wears the number 27 in Newcastle as a tribute to Philippe Albert , a former Newcastle player who also wore the 27.

The start of the 2004/05 season was disappointing for Taylor. He injured himself and couldn't play. But he came back to play 22 games for Newcastle, saving his season.

In June 2005 he represented England's U21s at the Toulon International Tournamend , in which England finished 3rd. He scored his first U21 goal against Germany on September 6, 2005 and scored two goals against Poland's U21 team in October 2005.

Taylor suffered a serious shoulder injury on December 26, 2005 that cost him the rest of the season.

He scored his first goal for Newcastle United against Celta Vigo on November 23, 2006 in the UEFA Cup. Shortly thereafter, on December 9, 2006, he scored his first Premier League goal against Blackburn Rovers.

At the game against Birmingham in the FA Cup on January 7, 2007 he was voted player of the game . Taylor scored his second league goal in a 2-1 away win over Sheffield United .

He played a key role in the 2007 European Under-21 Football Championship when the team made it to the semi-finals. He missed the first game, but played the other two group matches and the semi-finals, in which he was unable to prevent the Netherlands from equalizing due to a recently sustained ankle injury. After playing stoppage time with the injury, he converted his penalty in the subsequent penalty shoot-out . Even so, England lost the penalty shoot-out with 12:13.
