The Romford to Upminster Line is a railway line in London that connects the Romford and Upminster stations and is located entirely in the London Borough of Havering . Passenger traffic on the route has been part of London Overground since 2015 .

history

The line opened on June 7, 1893 and was intended as a branch of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway . It should give the company access to the Great Eastern Main Line . In Romford the line had its own station, which was independent of that of the Great Eastern Main Line. Emerson Park Station opened on October 1, 1909. With the renovation at Upminster station, the line received a head platform in the station and thus effectively became part of the Great Eastern Railway . In the 1960s there were several unsuccessful attempts to close the route. Electrical operation on the line began on April 17, 1986. Traffic on the route has been operated by London Overground since May 31, 2015, previously it was operated by Abellio Greater Anglia .

business

The route is completely in the Travelcard Zone 6. It is operated as part of the Arriva Rail London overground network . Trains of the following classes operate on the route: British Rail Class 315, British Rail Class 317 and British Rail Class 321.

Trains run every half hour from Monday to Saturday between 6:15 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. On Sundays, trains only run between 8:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The journey time is around nine minutes.

geology

When the line was being built in 1892, geologist TV Holmes discovered a five-meter-high defensive layer of ice-age material in the area north of St. Andrews Park. This is currently the Hornchurch Cutting Site of Special Scientific Interest. This was one of the southernmost points at which the ice cover of the Elster Ice Age had advanced.
