Arriva PLC is a British transport company that, as the current subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, has combined its European regional transport operations under the DB Arriva brand . Arriva operates as a bus and train service provider in 14 European countries and transported 2,214 million passengers in 2019.

history

Foundation and first years

In 1938 the Cowie family founded a company ( T Cowie Ltd ) in Sunderland, Northern England , which dealt in used motorcycles . In the 1960s the automobile trade was started.

In 1965 the company became a public company listed on the London Stock Exchange .

The first step into the bus sector did not take place until 1980 with the takeover of Gray-Green Coaches in London from the George Ewer Group . Further takeovers of bus companies followed. The largest takeover of British Bus Group plc to date in 1996 made the company one of the UK's leading bus operators.

In 1997, the Cowie Group was finally renamed Arriva.

Takeover by Deutsche Bahn

In March 2010, Deutsche Bahn announced a public takeover offer worth EUR 2.8 billion for Arriva. On August 27, 2010, the takeover was completed and the listing on the London Stock Exchange was canceled. On the one hand, the activities in Germany (now trading as Netinera ) were sold to a consortium around Trenitalia in the course of the takeover . On the other hand, the previous international passenger transport activities of DB have now been assigned to Arriva (e.g. Chiltern Railways ).

In mid-May 2013, Deutsche Bahn completely took over the Central European regional transport services from Veolia Transdev , which were operated under the Veolia Transport Central Europe brand . DB Arriva is thus strengthening its activities in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic and is expanding them for the first time to Croatia , Serbia and Slovenia . As a result, 6300 employees and 3400 vehicles will be taken over at 60 locations. In 2012 the turnover was 253 million euros. The largest national companies taken over were in the Czech Republic and Poland.

In Malta , Arriva was selected as the new operator as part of the reform of the transport system and operated bus services there from July 3, 2011. The contract was terminated prematurely at the turn of the year 2013/2014.

Arriva is now divided into the UK Bus (over 17,000 employees), UK Trains (approx. 5,000 employees) and Mainland Europe (approx. 23,000 employees) divisions.

Due to a decline in profits for Deutsche Bahn in 2018, the company intended to sell its subsidiary Arriva.

Due to previously unknown pension obligations of 432 million euros and a multi-year investment backlog, potential investors showed little interest in the company.

United Kingdom

UK bus

Arriva operates bus services in the Midlands , North East England , North West and Wales, Scotland West, the Shires and Essex, Southern Counties and Yorkshire . Arriva also operates bus services in London.

At the beginning of 2008, Arriva expanded its portfolio in England with the acquisition of Telling Golden Miller and now also provides services at London airports such as u. a. Shuttle services to the hotels and replacement trips in the event of aircraft failures.

UK Trains

The railways operated by Arriva included a large part of the railway lines from Wales with Arriva Trains Wales (Trenau Arriva Cymru): On December 7, 2003 , Arriva took over the concession of the railway lines in Wales from the NX Group (Wales and Borders Trains) for 15 years , a review takes place every 5 years. On October 14, 2018, Transport for Wales / Trafnidiaeth Cymru took over these routes again. Until 2004, Arriva Trains North operated the railway lines in the area around Middlesbrough , including the route of the former Stockton and Darlington Railway . On July 10, 2007, Arriva was assigned the franchise for the Cross Country subnetwork previously operated by Virgin for the period from November 2007 to April 2016, to which parts of Central Trains will still be added.

Chiltern Railways, London Overground and Tyne and Wear Metro joined Arriva UK in connection with the takeover by DB . On April 1, 2016, Northern , a brand of Arriva UK Trains, replaced the former operator Northern Rail in the north of England. On November 13, 2016, Arriva took over the operation of the London Overground as Arriva Rail London .

Continental Europe

Denmark

Denmark was the first transport market in mainland Europe, which Arriva entered in 1997 with the purchase of the Unibus company. In the following years the bus companies Bus Danmark, Combus, Wulff Bus, Veolia Danmark and Pan Bus were integrated. In 2003 Arriva Danmark was the first private company to receive concessions to operate local rail passenger transport . Arriva received these concessions again in 2009 and extended them from 2015 to 2020.

In 2018 Arriva is Denmark's largest bus operator and second largest rail operator. With almost 4,000 employees, bus and rail services are provided in Copenhagen (including liner boats in urban traffic) and the Aarhus – Skjern, Aarhus – Struer, Struer – Skjern, Thisted – Struer, Esbjerg – Skjern, Esbjerg – no. Nebel and Esbjerg – Niebüll in central and northern Jutland.

In the Copenhagen area , Arriva Danmark has been operating 400 electric cars as a franchisee of DriveNow Carsharing as part of public transport under the “DriveNow - Operated by Arriva” concept since autumn 2015 . The vehicles are part of the public transport system in Copenhagen.

Italy

Arriva entered the Italian bus market in 2002 and is now one of the largest bus operators in Italy with 3,500 employees. Arriva operates bus services in Lombardy , Friuli Venezia Giulia and Turin , among others . Arriva Italia Rail was founded in 2012 .

Croatia

With the takeover of Veolia Transdev in mid-May 2013, the company entered bus transport in Croatia. With a fleet of 600 buses and 1,400 employees, Arriva Hrvatska serves 11.7 million passengers a year.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands, Arriva Personenvervoer Nederland operates numerous bus routes in half of the provinces (not active in Noord-Holland , Utrecht and Zeeland ). In addition, their subsidiary NoordNed, together with the Dutch railway company NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), received the concession for the railway lines in the north-east of the country (provinces: Groningen , Friesland ), including the cross-border railway line Leer-Groningen . Arriva took over 100% of the shares in the consortium in 2003. Arriva also operates the Dordrecht - Geldermalsen line . In December 2016, Arriva took over the entire bus service, as well as several railway lines in the province of Limburg , including the cross-border regional express LIMAX (also known as RE 18) between Herzogenrath and Heerlen . Since January 27, 2019, the line has been running to Aachen Hauptbahnhof on the German side and to Maastricht on the Dutch side . Vehicles of the type Flirt 3 from Stadler are used. Arriva ordered 226 new buses for bus transport in 2015. 99 Stadler GTW and 36 Stadler Flirt 3 trains are in use in rail traffic . In 2017, 18 newly developed Stadler Wink was ordered. Arriva's Limburg department is a member of the Aachen Transport Association .

Poland

In Poland, Arriva was only active in regional rail transport with its subsidiary Arriva RP until mid-May 2013 . Since then, with the takeover of Veolia Transdev, bus traffic has also been operated in the north and south of the country (1,300 employees and 840 vehicles).

Portugal

Portugal was entered by Arriva in 2000 through an acquisition in the northwest. Arriva is now also active in the area around the capital Lisbon , including with a stake in the largest Portuguese transport company Barraqueiro Transportes . Transportes Sul do Tejo is wholly owned by the group. With over 5800 employees, Portugal is the largest Arriva location on the mainland.

Sweden

In Sweden, Arriva Sweden has been operating the Pågatåg regional train lines in Skåne in the south of the country since summer 2007 . Since March 2009 the company has been operating bus routes around Märsta and on the Mälaren islands on behalf of SL .

Arriva has been operating the Östgotapendeln regional train lines in the Östergotland region since 2010. In August 2012, the company also took over bus and train services in the capital Stockholm. The contract has a term of 12 years. Arriva Sverige has been operating the three Roslagsbanan routes since January 2013 .

Significant start-up problems with the traffic in Stockholm and the resulting high fines - the highest penalties ever due in Swedish local traffic - led Arriva Sverige to make a loss of 326 million SEK (35.3 million euros) in 2013 could only be saved from bankruptcy with a grant from the owner DB.

Serbia

In mid-May 2013, the takeover of Veolia Transdev saw the entry into bus transport in Serbia.

Slovakia

Arriva acquired 80% of the shares in Eurobus Invest in July 2008 and has since been represented with bus services in Hungary and Slovakia . Veolia Transdev took over other Slovak bus companies in 2013. With the majority stake in the bus companies SAD Trnava and SAD Liorbus , more than 2000 employees have been working for Arriva in Slovakia since summer 2015. Arriva has 1,300 buses there.

Slovenia

With the takeover of Veolia Transdev in mid-May 2013, the entry into bus transport in Slovenia took place . At the end of 2015, Arriva took over the Alpetour bus company, which operates numerous bus routes in the north-west of the country.

Arriva has around 975 employees in Slovenia.

Spain

Arriva has been active in Spain since 1999 in Galicia with 224 buses on 25 bus routes as well as in the Madrid region and Mallorca . Due to the opening of the market in cross-border traffic through the third railway package, four high-speed trains with ETCS are to run daily on the route between A Coruña and Vigo , which was opened in 2015, from the third quarter of 2019 - and then to Porto in Portugal. The 342 km long route between A Coruña and Porto takes two hours and 46 minutes - via Santiago de Compostela , Vigo, Valença and Nine .

Czech Republic

Arriva entered the Czech bus market in 2007 through ARRIVA holding Česká republika sro and has since operated the bus companies Transcentrum Bus sro , Bosák Bus sro and OSNADO sro in the north of Prague (Praha) and in the southwest of Prague.

After the takeover of Veolia Transport Central Europe in 2013, bus transports Veolia Transport Praha sro (in the region around Prague), Veolia Transport Východní Čechy as , Veolia Transport Morava as (in the region around Ostrava ) and Veolia Transport Teplice sro ( Teplice ) are joining us 2600 employees and 1600 vehicles added. On July 1, 2013, these companies were renamed Arriva Praha sro , Arriva Východní Čechy as , Arriva Morava as and Arriva Teplice sro Also in 2013, Arriva took over two bus companies from Abellio . This increased the number of DB Arriva employees in the Czech Republic to around 3,100 and that of buses to over 2,000 vehicles.

The trolleybus Teplice is the only operated by Arriva O bus -Netz.

Arriva Morava operates local rail transport on a route of 22 kilometers ( Železnice Desná ). Since February 29, 2016, the route from Prague to Benešov has been operated every two hours on weekdays . The journey takes 51 minutes. Further trains run daily from Prague via Pardubice and Olomouc to Trenčín in Slovakia .

From December 2019 to 2022 Arriva will operate the four regional lines R21 Prague – Turnov (Turnau) –Tanvald (Tannwald), R22 Kolin – Nový Bor (Haida), R24 Prague – Rakovnik (Rakonitz) and R26 Prague – Písek – Ceske Budejovice (Budweis) take over.

Hungary

Arriva has also been represented in Hungary since it took over 80% of the shares in Eurobus in July 2008. In 2012, VT Arriva ( joint venture between Videoton and Arriva founded as VT Transman ) won a tender for bus transport in Budapest .

At the end of 2015 Arriva had around 16,000 buses , 25 diesel locomotives , over 700 multiple units (including around 50 trams ), around 2000 multiple units and almost 100 passenger coaches .
