The Affolderner lake is a 1.65 km² large reservoir on the Eder in Waldeck-Frankenberg , middle North Hesse ( Germany ).

The reservoir serves as a lower basin for the Waldeck pumped storage power station , as a flood retention and compensation basin for the Eder, Edersee, Fulda, Weser and Mittelland Canal, and as a storage basin for the Affoldern run-of-river power station. The body of water is designated as a bird sanctuary and it is used as a fishing area.

Geographical location

The Affolderner See is about 2.5 km (as the crow flies ) below or south-southeast of the Edertalsperre in the Rabensteinpforte between Hemfurth and Affoldern on the Fulda tributary of the Eder . It is located immediately northeast of the Kellerwald and represents the western end of the Wegaer Ederaue .

Barrage and reservoir

The reservoir created in 1929 was much smaller than it is today: At that time, a narrow, elongated lake was created by means of a small barrage , which had a storage volume of 0.32 million  . It was not until 1972 that the lake was extended to the west and a large basin was added to the north, so that it now had a maximum storage volume of 5.4 million m³. As a dividing line between the old and the new lake basin, a crescent-shaped, narrow and approximately 1.5 km long dam was left as an island (see the section on protected areas ).

In May 1998 a larger step with an integrated run-of-river power plant (see paragraph Affoldern run-of-river power plant ) was put into operation below the existing barrage on the southwestern edge of Affoldern , so that the water content increased by 2.2 million m³ to a maximum of 7.6 million m³. The old fortification that stood further to the west was largely demolished; their remains can only be seen at low tide. At the new barrage, which was integrated into an elongated dam and the trial damming of which ended in 1999, the water is drained in the amount specified by the Waterways and Shipping Office.

The water surface of the Affolderner See is at full water level at 204.4  m above sea level. NHN , the height of the Eder directly below its barrage at 194  m ; this is the lowest point of the adjacent Kellerwald-Edersee National Park .

Power plants

Waldeck pumped storage power station

The Affolderner See serves in particular as the lower basin for the pumped storage power stations Waldeck I & II built near Hemfurth and the upper basins Waldeck I & II there . At times when little electricity is used, its water is pumped into two upper basins on the Peterskopf (or Ermerod), creating potential energy . In times when a lot of electricity is consumed, this is converted into electrical energy by the water falling through the same pipes to the turbines in the pumped storage power plants , so that combined with an output of up to 600 MW, energy can be produced in both power plants  .

Affoldern run-of-river power plant

The Affoldern run-of-river power plant, which was integrated into the barrage, has an output of 2.7 MW, which can be generated in turbines using water draining from the reservoir.

Protected areas

Apart from the area of influence of the Eder in the Affolderner See, the entire reservoir is part of these protected areas: the nature reserve of the reservoir of Affoldern (NSG no. 82621; founded in 1975; 162 hectares) and the fauna, flora, habitat and bird sanctuary of the reservoir of Affoldern (FFH- and VSG No. 4820-401; 147 ha).

Not only do numerous migratory birds use these protected areas as resting and breeding sites and places to forage; Many birds and other animal species even winter there, especially since the lake never completely freezes over due to the local hydropower plants . In winter the animal world has the reservoir to itself. Its southern part, including the dam located in the middle of the lake, is closed to people.

Rest and sightseeing

While the Affolderner See, in addition to its function as a basin for the aforementioned power plants, is located in three protected areas, its northern, larger lake area is designated as a fishing water. The Peterskopfbahn takes you to the upper basins that are attached to the power plants.

There is also the Eder draisine at the reservoir, which can be used to travel on the former E.ON connecting line between Affoldern- and Hemfurth. A little north of the dam, near the outskirts of Affoldern, next to Landesstrasse  3086 (Ederseestaumauer – Affoldern) is Das Tolle Haus Am Edersee ; the house and everything in it is "upside down".

Excursion possibilities

Among the destinations on and near the Affolderner See in particular the reservoir include Lake Eder , the low mountain range Kellerwald with National Park Keller Edersee and nature park basement Edersee and the castle Waldeck and power plants Waldeck I & II with their upper reservoir.
