The Wildunger Senke (natural area 341.5) is a 91.30 km², largely forestless, but surrounded by forests , intensively agriculturally used basin landscape on both sides of the lower central reaches of the Eder in northern Hesse . It is almost entirely in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district , with a small part to the east in the Schwalm-Eder district .

Natural structure and allocation

The Wildunger Senke belongs to the West Hessian mountain and sink country ( natural area 34) and is part of the Ostwaldecker Randsenken (natural area 341). Together with the Hessenwald (341.6) and the Löwensteiner Grund (341.7) to the southeast, it is part of the so-called eastern roofing of the Kellerwald (344). It is naturally subdivided into four sub-areas (areas according to the Hessen Environmental Atlas ):

  • 341.50: Netzehügelland (36.56 km²)
  • 341.51: Wegaer Ederaue (21.89 km²)
  • 341.52: Wildehügelland or Wilde-Hügelland (27.53 km²)
  • 341.520: Braunauer Winkel (5.42 km²)

In the Wegaer Ederaue, which runs from northwest to southeast, which encompasses the wide valley of the Eder from the Affolderner See and the Rabensteinpforte near Affoldern to the Porta Hassiaca west of Fritzlar , the Wildunger Depression has its greatest east-west extension with a length of around 16 km. To the north of the Ederaue, the Netzehügelland adjoins both sides of the Netze , which extends to around two kilometers north of Netze . It is bordered in the east by the elongated, wooded mountain range of the Old Forest , in the west by the mountains Blauer Kopf (approx. 340  m ), Michelskopf ( 424.7  m ), Uhrenkopf (approx.  405  m ), which terminate the Edersee trough to the east  , Kanzel ( 399.3  m ), Hardt (approx.  340  m ), and the town and castle mountain Waldeck and the edge heights of the Sachsenhausen hill country that adjoin to the north and begin with the Mühlberg ( 408  m ) . South of Ederaue the wild Unger ranges sink with the Wild hills, which (to the south with the Braunauer angle between the Braunauer Berg 440.8  m ) and the Auenberg ( 610.7  m ) almost up to Berg freedom sufficient deep into the basement wood into it. In north-south direction, the total extension of the Wildunger Depression is around 22 km.

The neighboring natural areas are, clockwise, the Alte Wald (340.14) in the east, the Hessenwald (341.6) in the southeast, the Löwensteiner Berge (344.01) and the Mittelkellerwald (344.1) in the south, the Wildunger Bergland (344.2) and the Große Hardt (344.3) in the southwest, as well as the Herzhausen-Hemfurther Edertal (344.4), with the Edersee , and the Sachsenhausen hill country (340.013) in the northwest.

geology

Like the neighboring Hessenwald in the southeast and the Löwensteiner Grund , which adjoins it further southeast , the Wildunger Senke lies on the Arolsen-Schlierbacher Scholle of the Waldecker Wald , which is dominated by red sandstone . T. the eastern edge of the northern basement forest structure .

The bedrock is Unterer Buntsandstein , which at the eastern interface with the Waldecker Wald and Hessenwald merges partly into Middle Buntsandstein. On the western edge, the Zechstein belt lies on the eastern slope of the Kellerwald , which occupies larger contiguous areas in particular south-east of Buhlen and between Mehlen and Bad Wildungen . The Wegaer Ederaue der Eder , which divides the area in a west-east direction, interrupts sandstone and Zechstein with sediments .

On the extreme northern edge, on the Netzer Mulde around Netze , and in the extreme south, on the Braunauer Winkel near Braunau , there are larger floating earth islands.

Waters

The most important body of water is the Eder , which flows through and drains the Wegaer Ederaue and thus the Wildunger Basin from west to east, from the Affolderner See and the Rabensteinpforte to the Porta Hassiaca.

From the north (orographic left) the Netze , the Böhner Bach and the Mölcherbach flow as the most important tributaries , which drain the Netzehügelland - the latter also the Old Forest. The Netze flows into the Eder at Mehlen, the Böhner Bach and the Mölcherbach in Bergheim.

The two most important Eder tributaries coming from the right (southwest) into the Wildunger Basin are the Wesebach , which enters the Ederaue west of Giflitz and flows into the Eder shortly afterwards, and the Wilde , which flows through a number of smaller tributaries (in particular the Sonderbach, Großer Brunnenbach and Landwehr) drains the edge heights.

In contrast, the Braunauer Winkel in the south of the Wildehügelland is drained via the Wälzebach to the southeast to the Schwalm .

Localities and transport infrastructure

In addition to the core town of Bad Wildungen , the following localities and districts are located in the Wildunger Senke:

In terms of traffic, the area is accessed by two federal highways and a network of state and state roads. The federal road 253 runs from Unthanken to Wega along the south bank of the Eder, then turns to the southwest before Bad Wildungen and leaves the Wildunger depression through the wild hills between Braunau and Odershausen. Between Wega and Bad Wildungen, the federal highway 485 branches off to the north and runs in a generally northward direction past Waldeck and through nets towards Korbach . On the northern bank of the Eder, the state road 3383 runs through the entire Wega Ederaue from Fritzlar to Affoldern.

The single-track railway line Wabern-Fritzlar-Bad Wildungen , which went into operation in 1884, also runs along the Eder . Today it is served by the Kurhessenbahn , while the route from Wega via Netze to Korbach has been closed since 1995 and has now been expanded as the Ederseebahn cycle path .
