The Peterskopfbahn is a standard-gauge funicular on the Peterskopf in the Kellerwald in the municipality of Edertal , Waldeck-Frankenberg district , North Hesse ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Peterskopfbahn runs from the western end of the Affolderner See near Hemfurth, the southern district of the Edertal district of Hemfurth-Edersee, to the Peterskopf ( 507  m above sea  level ), which rises south-southwest of the Edertalsperre. It is the dam of the Edersee in the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park . The funicular then leads to the upper basin of the Waldeck pumped storage plant on the mountain and its western neighbor, Ermerod ( 540  m above sea level ) , the machinery of which is located inside the Peterskopfberg and west of the Affolderner See.

history

The Peterskopfbahn was built in 1929 parallel to the start of construction of the "Upper Waldeck I" basin on the Peterskopf and that of the pressure pipeline of the "Waldeck Ι pumped storage power plant" located along the funicular railway.

Initially, the funicular acted as a transport line to not only transport employees, equipment and material from the power plant, but also the elements of the double pressure pipeline to connect the power plant in the valley with the upper basin on the Peterskopf.

It was only on June 8, 1983 that the Peterskopfbahn was redesigned for tourist purposes. Since that day, in addition to its function as a freight railway, it has mainly been used for passenger transport . The number of passengers has grown to around 40,000 annually in recent years.

At the beginning of the 21st century the funicular had to be overhauled and its operation was constantly threatened with closure. The renovated Peterskopfbahn has been in operation again since May 1st, 2005.
