Chiltern Railways is a British railway company . It was created in 1996 as part of the privatization of British Rail . It operates all trains in London from Marylebone Station . In 2002 the concession was extended for a further twenty years.

The company previously belonged to the British company Laing Rail , which the Deutsche Bahn Group took over in 2008. This was initially assigned to DB Regio and since 2011 Arriva , today it is formed as Arriva UK Trains .

Chiltern Railways has 750 employees. Sales in 2007 were £ 120 million. In 2007 around 17 million passengers were carried, mainly commuters. With the introduction of the new “Mainline” concept, many trains have been equipped with free WiFi.

stretch

The core of the route network served by Chiltern Railways are the connections in the area between London and Birmingham that were once established by the Great Central Railway (GCR) in cooperation with the Metropolitan Railway and the GCR in cooperation with the Great Western Railway .

The following four lines are served by Chiltern Railways:

The line between London and Birmingham runs through High Wycombe , Bicester , Banbury , Leamington Spa , Warwick and Solihull . The line to Aylesbury shares the tracks with the Metropolitan Line of London Underground between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham . Some trains run beyond Birmingham Snow Hill to Stourbridge and Kidderminster .

Incident at Gerrards Cross

A roof should have been built over the main line near Gerrards Cross station so that a Tesco supermarket could have been built on it. This overburden collapsed on June 30, 2005 and buried the railway line. No one was injured, but operations were interrupted and could not be resumed until August 20. The compensation Tesco paid to Chiltern Railways is at least £ 8.5 million. The supermarket group has also agreed to finance an advertising campaign to win back the lost passengers.
