Life

Dome, Museum Park Linz

Georgsdorf studied from 1977 to 1983 at the University for Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz. During this time he co-founded the Stadtwerkstatt Linz and the experimental music project Die Post . His musical works include compositions for Heiner Müller's Duell-Traktor-Fatzer at the Berliner Ensemble, compositions for the giant forest xylophones he built and his participation in the Berlin Improvisers Orchestra as violinist and conductor. As a sculptor, he created, among other things, the metal sculpture dome , which was in the Museum of Modern Art ( Palais Liechtenstein ) in Vienna from 1983 to 1996 and has been in the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz since 1996 . Since 1977 he has made numerous avant-garde films and from 1980 was a member of the Austria Filmmakers Cooperative .

Georgsdorf has been involved in olfactory art since the 1980s . In 1996 he built the first odor organ, the mechanically operated prototype Smeller 1 as part of the Werk'Zeuge exhibition in the Upper Austrian State Museum , with which thousands of smells instead of sounds could be played by the audience. From 1983 to 1986 Georgsdorf was involved in the Bangkok project as a member of the Minus Delta t group . Since the 1990s he has dealt increasingly with interactive media .

Fascinated by the aesthetics, facial expressions and poetry in the communication of the deaf , Georgsdorf learned sign language and, after seven years of study, published MUDRA in 2000 , the first digital, bidirectional lexicon for Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS) in nine dialects. Among other things, in the projects sinnlos and Deaf Dance , he artistically dealt with the topic, shot video clips about and in sign language, staged lectures on the culture and language of the deaf and organized dance events for the deaf and hearing.

In 2005 he was invited as a speaker at the first Wikipedia world conference Wikimania and presented his ideas of sign language on Wikipedia and his concept Hyperfilm for the integration of the knowledge of the illiterate world .

His various political and social interventions included the Opal-so-nicht movement he founded in 2007 , which he chaired as spokesman, and which resulted in successful proceedings against a project by the companies Gazprom and BASF in the Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park pulled.

Since 2011, Georgsdorf has been working on the implementation of his long-term project Smeller 2 , an electronic odor organ that exuded complex odor compositions in the large-scale Sensesrausch exhibition in Upper Austria's cultural district from June to October 2012 in all-day automatic operation. In 2013, Wolfgang Georgsdorf received the Austrian Outstanding Artist Award for interdisciplinary culture for Smeller 2.0 . In 2016 Georgsdorf dedicated an own festival of the same name in Berlin to his art practice " Osmodrama ", which he developed with Smeller , in which time-based olfactory art was shown in exemplary connection examples with common artistic disciplines. The synosmia “Autocomplete”, an abstract and purely olfactory story, also premiered at this festival.

Wolfgang Georgsdorf lives in Berlin with the actress Eva Mattes and two children.
