Whitehaven is a port city in Cumbria in the north-west of England , United Kingdom . It is the seat of the Borough of Copeland . Whitehaven has around 25,500 residents. Near the city is the Sellafield nuclear complex .
history
Whitehaven was attacked by the American Navy under the leadership of John Paul Jones in the American Revolutionary War in 1778 . The rectangular map of Whitehaven ( Georgian architecture ) served as a model for the construction of Manhattan .
Famous citizens
- Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) was kidnapped here as a child by a nanny.
- George Washington's (1732–1799) paternal grandmother, Mildred Gale b. Warner married the second marriage in 1700 to the Whitehaven tobacco merchant George Gale , who founded the city of Whitehaven (Maryland) in the USA after her death . She was buried in St Nicholas' Church in Whitehaven in 1701 .
