Parga ( Greek Πάργα ( f. Sg. ); Albanian  Pargë / -a ) is a small town with around 2500 inhabitants and a municipality with the administrative seat Kanalaki on the Greek west coast ( Epirus region ) on the Ionian Sea .

Parga has been made up of the two municipalities of Parga and Fanari since 2011, which are separated by an approximately two-kilometer stretch of coast in the bay of Agios Ioannis, which belongs to the municipality of Igoumenitsa .

Geographical location

Located about 40 kilometers south of the port city of Igoumenitsa and 60 kilometers north of Preveza Airport , Parga can only be reached via a "dead end" that can be reached from the main road. There is also a scenic coastal road that starts in Igoumenitsa right at the ferry port and leads to Parga via Plataria, Sivota and Perdika. In front of Parga are the two islands of Paxos and Andipaxos . In the season these are approached daily from Parga with smaller ships.

history

Byzantine sources mention the place for the first time around 1337. The history of Parga is characterized, among other things, by multiple foreign administrations. So both were Venetians , Ottomans and British represent stately. In 1819 the Albanian pasha Tepedelenli Ali Pascha bought the city from the English and incorporated it into his territory, which was, however, subjugated again by the Ottomans in 1822. In 1913 Parga came to the Kingdom of Greece . During the Second World War , Parga was occupied by the Italians .

Attractions

In addition to some beautiful beaches (Kryoneri, Piso Kryoneri, Valtos, Lychnos) and the winding city center with the promenade, the Venetian fortress built high above the city, around 1570 with a view of the rugged coast, is probably the most important attraction of the often day tourists from Corfu , Paxi and from the surrounding area.

Community structure

Parga was recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1919 and raised to the status of an urban community (dimos) in 1947 . In 1997 expanded to include a few neighboring communities, the municipal area was more than tripled with the administrative reform in 2010 through the incorporation of Fanaris , the municipality moved to the town of Kanalaki. The two municipal districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki enotita ) are further subdivided into two city districts (Ez. Gr. Dimotiki kinotita ) and local communities (gr. Topiki enotita ), which correspond to the municipality areas from the period before 1997 and elect local representatives. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.
