Strabane ( Irish : An Srath Bán ) is a town in the historic county of Tyrone in Northern Ireland ( United Kingdom ). It was also the administrative seat of the former district of the same name , which was merged into the Derry City and Strabane district in 2015 . Strabane is now one of the two administrative headquarters of the Derry City and Strabane district. The city is right on the border with County Donegal and thus the Republic of Ireland .

The place

The Morne flows through the center of Strabane and meets the River Finn to form the River Foyle . The Lifford Bridge , one of three bridges over the fast flowing Foyle, connects Strabane with Lifford on the west bank of the Foyle. The twin town of Lifford is the administrative center of Donegal County, but with fewer than 1,500 residents eleven times smaller than Strabane.

At the census in April 2001, the population of Strabane was determined to be 13,456; 93.3% of them had a Catholic and 6.1% a Protestant background. By mid-2008 the population had grown to over 16,000. Strabane is the second largest city in Tyrone after the county capital Omagh . Similar to Omagh, where two rivers also join, Strabane has repeatedly suffered severe damage from flooding in the city center.

In the course of the Irish-language education there is a "primary school" in Strabane as a Gaelscoil . Strabane was particularly badly affected by the Northern Ireland conflict and is referred to as the most bombed town in Northern Ireland ("the most bombed town in Northern Ireland").

traffic

Strabane is roughly halfway between Omagh and Derry City in County Londonderry , Northern Ireland's second largest city after Belfast . It is connected to both cities via the A5, and in its south-eastern extension as the N2 in the Republic of Ireland via Monaghan also to Dublin . The N14 also connects Strabane via Lifford with Letterkenny , the largest city in County Donegal, just a few miles away . The Éireann bus connects Strabane with Busáras in Dublin and Letterkenny in the northwest several times a day . Despite its relative size, Strabane can no longer be reached via the rail network.
The Strabane Canal is currently being restored.
