The place
Lifford is located in the far east of the county, directly across from Strabane in County Tyrone , Northern Ireland, which is eleven times larger than its twin town , to which Lifford is connected by the Lifford Bridge over the River Foyle . The population of Lifford was determined in the 2016 Census to be 1626 people, with a slight overhang of female residents. Lifford is located in the Finn Valley in the east of the county and developed around a castle built in the 16th century by Manghus Ó Domhnaill. Later, until the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, it was a British army garrison .

From Lifford the N15 lead via Donegal Town and Ballyshannon to Sligo in the southwest and the N14 to Letterkenny in the northwest. Lifford is connected to Derry and Omagh in Northern Ireland via Strabane via the A5 and further south-east via Monaghan via the N2 to Dublin .
Public transport is handled by Bus Éireann , which connects Lifford several times a day with Busáras in Dublin and Dublin Airport, as well as Letterkenny in the north and Ballybofey on the N15 in the west.
The city had been a stopping point for one of County Donegal's two narrow-gauge railways since 1909 . Lifford has not been connected to rail services in Ireland since 1960 .
