Matthew Sweeney

Matthew Sweeney ( October 6, 1952 in Lifford , County Donegal - August 5, 2018 ) was an Irish writer best known as a poet .

Life

Sweeney was born in Donegal, the northernmost county of Ireland , in 1952. He attended school in County Meath and the UCD in Dublin . In 1973 he moved to London , which initially became his main residence. Sweeney studied in London and at the University in Freiburg chemical engineering but not graduated from.

In 1981, Sweeney's first volume of poetry, A Dream of Maps, was published, followed by numerous others. In addition to poetry for adult readers, Sweeney also wrote poetry and short stories for children and was (co-) editor of several poetry anthologies. The book for young people Fuchs and the books of poetry Rosa Milch (2008 by Berlin Verlag ) and Hund und Mond (2017 by Hanser Verlag ) were published in German in 2003 , each translated by Jan Wagner . Sweeney later lived again in Ireland, alternating between southern County Cork and Donegal. He was a member of Aosdána .

Sweeney died in August 2018 at the age of 65 from complications from motor neuron disease .
