The Strabane Canal is a waterway in County Tyrone , Northern Ireland . In 1791, it was decided to build a 6.5 kilometer long canal from the River Foyle near Leck, around 15 kilometers upstream from Derry , to Strabane . Two locks called 'Crampsies' and 'Devines' were needed. It was built in 1792 and cost £ 12,000 at the time . The costs were guaranteed by the 'Commissioners of Inland Navigation' supported by the 'Marquess of Abercorn'.

The canal brought considerable prosperity to the towns of Strabane , County Tyrone and Lifford , County Donegal in the first quarter of the 19th century, and the towns became thriving markets for agricultural goods. In 1962 the use of the canal was stopped.

In June 2006 the Strabane Lifford Development Commission awarded £ 1.3 million for waterway rehabilitation. 'Doran Consulting' based in Belfast was commissioned . The project was officially launched in Lifford by Mary McAleese , President of Ireland, and includes the restoration of 1.5 miles of the canal and the two locks. The project also includes building a jetty near Lifford Bridge and upgrading the adjacent recreational area. After the construction work was completed in 2007, the Strabane district refused to take over the maintenance of the canal due to poor quality.
