Shaftesbury is a town in north Dorset , England. The city is about 200 meters above sea level. In 2001 the city had 6,665 inhabitants with 3,112 households. From 1001 to the time of the Reformation it was called Edwardstowe , as the remains of Edward the Martyr were in Shaftesbury Abbey .

The town overlooks the Blackmore Valley and a little over the River Stour. Glastonbury Tor and the Isle of Purbeck can be seen from various vantage points .

Shaftesbury is particularly famous for Gold Hill, a stair-like, steep street (which was used for "Hovis Bread" in advertising).
