Stonehaven ( Scottish Gaelic : Cala na Creige ) is a town in Aberdeenshire , in Scotland .
geography
Stonehaven is on the northeast coast of Scotland . In 2011 the city had 11,431 inhabitants. It is the administrative headquarters of the Aberdeenshire Council Area . Stonehaven is also the seat of the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF), a worldwide alliance of sea rescue services.
history
The development of settlements in the area of the city can be traced back to the Iron Age and shows a strong connection to fishing. Stonehaven was the capital of the historic county of Kincardineshire . In the 16th century the city was called Stonehyve or Stonehive .
Attractions
- The St James the Great Episcopal Church was founded. 1877
- The bell tower dates from 1790. The clock was added to the tower in 1793, moved in 1894 and has retained its current appearance. The two bells were installed in 1793 and 1887.
- The original market cross was from 1645 and was redesigned for Queen Victoria's anniversary in 1887.
- The old customs house was built in the 16th century by the 5th Earl Marischal as a warehouse for Dunnottar Castle and a prison and courthouse were added in 1600. It is the oldest building in Stonehaven. From 1767 it was used as a shop for fishing supplies. Today the Old Tolbooth houses a city museum and restaurant.

Stonehaven is on the Edinburgh - Dundee - Aberdeen railway line . On August 12, 2020, a train derailed on the route about 10 km west of the city when it hit a landslide . Three people died in the accident , including the driver and a train attendant.

In 1992, the Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven allegedly invented the deep fried Mars bar .
