The St James the Great Episcopal Church is a church building of the Scottish Episcopal Church in the Scottish town of Stonehaven in the Council area Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1993.

history

Work on the Church of St. James began with the laying of the foundation stone by the Bishop of Brechin , Alexander Forbes , on September 21, 1875. Before his appointment as bishop, Forbes was pastor of the old Episcopal Church of Stonehavens. The important Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson was responsible for the design . The work was completed on October 1, 1877. The organ could only be installed after a donation bazaar from the female parishioners in 1881. An increase in capacity soon became necessary. This was carried out and completed in 1885, so that 520 seats were now available. The baptistery was dedicated in 1906 and one of the oldest baptismal fonts in the Scottish Episcopal Church was installed. The lead glass windows installed in 1929 come from Ninian Comper's workshop .

description

St James the Great Episcopal Church is in the historic center of Stonehaven on the right bank of the Carron Water . The building, which takes up numerous neo-Romanesque elements, is one of the small town's most striking landmarks. The nave of the three-aisled cruciform church is five axes wide. Arched windows are embedded along the side aisles and the upper aisles . The narthex and the polygonal baptistery with a tent roof are in front. On the southeast side, the building closes with a semicircular apse . The slender bell tower is largely unadorned and only a few irregularly arranged, small openings let light into the interior. Its uppermost component is rounded and closes with a slate-covered conical roof .
