Cheshunt

Cheshunt is a city in Hertfordshire in England . It is located in the Borough of Broxbourne and is a satellite town in the north of the metropolitan area of London . Cheshunt is less than 20 km from London city center on the West Anglia Main Line (London- Cambridge ) and on the M25 ring road . The city has around 50,000 inhabitants (2001). Cheshunt is an important location for the Tesco chain , whose corporate headquarters have been here for a long time. The original headquarters of the automaker Lotus Cars is also located in Cheshunt .

Cheshunt was on Ermine Street , the old Roman road north from London. In the 11th century Domesday Book , Cheshunt is listed as a Cestrehunt . The place name is possibly partly derived from the Latin castrum , which suggests that the place originated from a former Roman military camp.

In 1825 the first monorail was opened in Cheshunt by Henry Robinson Palmer ; it was pulled by horses and used to transport bricks. Until the 1960s, however, Cheshunt was primarily a center of gardening, where Thomas Rochford and his company researched new cultivation methods in corresponding glass houses. The plants used to be transported on the Lea, which flows east of Cheshunt, and later by land to London. There was also a shipyard in Cheshunt. In its place there is now a youth hostel. In the 1950s and 1960s gravel was mined near Cheshunt ; the area was then renatured again. Today Lee Valley Park is located there . In 2006 News International (part of Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation) began building a printing plant in Cheshunt.
