Crosby (Merseyside)
Crosby is a suburb of Liverpool and is located in northwest England in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Metropolitan County of Merseyside on the north side of the mouth of the River Mersey . Crosby has around 52,000 residents.
history
The place name is of Norman origin and means "place of the cross"; Crosby is therefore, like the neighboring Formby , a foundation of the Vikings. Until the connection to the railway network in the 1840s, Crosby remained a rather insignificant parish. The town was also called Great Crosby to distinguish it from the neighboring village of Little Crosby, which was incorporated in 1932 and which has retained its rural character to this day. In 1937 Great Crosby merged with Waterloo and Seaforth and formed with these places the Borough Crosby within the county of Lancashire . In 1974 this borough became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton .
