Anne Josephine Robinson (born September 26, 1944 in Crosby ) is a British journalist and television presenter . She is best known as the quiz show host of The Weakest Link .

Life

Robinson's father was a teacher and her mother was from Ireland, where she ran a market stall. Robinson grew up in Crosby Beach and attended boarding school in Hampshire .

After leaving school, Robinson first worked for a news agency and from 1967 completed an internship at the Daily Mail . When she entered into a liaison with Charlie Wilson , the deputy editor-in-chief, and finally married him in 1968, she had to leave the paper and switched to The Sunday Times . Their marriage, which resulted in a daughter in 1970, was divorced in 1973 after a breakdown due to Robinson's alcoholism . In December 1978, she quit the Sunday Times and retired to Crosby Beach to recover from her illness.

She then worked for the Liverpool Echo until she returned to the Daily Mirror in 1980 . There she worked as a columnist and editorial assistant. On November 14, 1982, she attended a dinner with the Queen , when she noticed that Diana was late. Robinson's research revealed that the princess had an eating disorder, which was published in an article a few days later. Under pressure from Michael Shay, the press secretary of Buckingham Palace , she was then removed from service.

Robinson has dedicated himself to television since 1982. She was initially featured as an occasional panelist on Question Time . From 1986 she represented Barry Took as head of the program Points of View , when this was not available; from 1988 to 1999 she permanently took over his post. From 1993 to 2001 she moderated the consumer magazine Watchdog .

She became known to a wide audience as the host of the quiz show The Weakest Link. In addition to the British edition of the BBC , she was also the presenter of the American NBC version. Trademarks are their grim demeanor and their caustic comments about the candidates (such as “Who is an insult to the British educational system?”). Her catchphrase “You are the weakest link - goodbye!”, With which she says goodbye to the retired candidates, has entered common parlance. Another trademark is the sympathetic, mischievous wink with which she ends every episode of The Weakest Link .
