Liverpool Exchange

The Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway (LC&SR) is an English railway company that operated a railway line between Liverpool's Sandhills station and Southport . The construction was approved by Parliament on July 2, 1847. The route was opened on July 24, 1848 with a temporary terminus in Waterloo .

history

The railway line was extended on May 13, 1850 from Waterloo to Liverpool Tithebarn Street / Liverpool Exchange. This double name of the station was later changed to Liverpool Exchange Station . The terminus in Southport was initially on Eastbank Street before the local station was closed and the current station on Chapel Street opened on August 22, 1851.

The railway company was taken over on June 14, 1855 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR). The LYR electrified the railway line with a conductor rail , which began operating on April 5, 1904. The LYR was merged with the London and North Western Railway on January 1, 1922 , which was eventually transferred to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway with the Railway Act 1921 in 1923 .

As part of the shutdowns of the Beeching Plan in the 1960s, this route was also intended to be closed. In 1978 it was integrated into the Merseyrail route network within the Northern Line , with operations being handled by British Rail until privatization in 1995 . The current operator is the Serco Abellio consortium, which has been operating the route on behalf of Merseyrail since 2003.
